The current house was rebuilt as an Elizabethan Manor and has a large and cosy lounge, formal and informal dining rooms, and seven bedrooms, each with their own character and stories to tell. The interiors are simple yet surprising, with artefacts and furnishings to match the age of the building: hand carved oak, historic stained glass windows, and even a complete suit of armour! This secluded and peaceful holiday home has a grand and majestic history, yet is welcoming and homely, offering you the rare opportunity to relax in rooms once occupied by royalty!
The accommodation is simple yet surprising, and has masses of space with seven bedrooms (three en suite), shower room, bathroom, kitchen, breakfast room, drawing room and conservatory, formal and informal dining rooms, utility and a quiet snug lounge for those of you who like to hide away with a good book. The surprises come from all directions - beautifully carved panels, chunky medieval furnishings, Elizabethan artworks and a full suit of battle armour! This is a house to immerse you in history and there is information on hand to fill in the details.
The kitchen is modern and uncomplicated with a range cooker, toaster, microwave, and kettle, and there is a washing machine and a tumble dryer in the separate utility room. The formal dining room seats eight, and you could imagine you’ve been whisked back in time to Tackbear’s origins, so historic and opulent are the surroundings. A hand carved oak panel bears the crests of Gilbert and Kniveton. The second dining hall is large and accommodating, with a deep inglenook fireplace containing a logburner and an adjoining supply of logs. In another alcove stands the Tackbear knight - a full suit of shining armour. The lounge has deeply upholstered leather sofas and armchairs, and another logburner in a deep brick fireplace. A separate, smaller lounge provides space for quiet reverie, reading or early morning tea. There is also a conservatory leading onto the walled garden.
Bedrooms vary from the ornate to the unadorned, and all have their own personality. Again, some of the furnishings date back over 400 years. There are en suite showers to three of the bedrooms, a separate shower room and a family bathroom. Some of the rooms upstairs display plaster relief panels with their own stories to tell.
The location is a perfect, away-from-it-all escape. The extensive estate provides you with large gardens, quiet hideaways, rolling fields (one the home of two very sweet natured donkeys!), A large fishing lake, and many walking routes including Gypsy Wood. All this, and only ten minutes into the town of Bude with its sandy beaches, shopping, restaurants canalside nature reserve, and lots of activities besides. There is plentiful parking at Tackbear, and plenty to do on site, not to mention the nearby village of Marhamchurch where there a great pub and a very pleasant walk along the canal into Bude.
There are also many places to visit within easy driving distance, such as Hartland, Clovelly, Boscastle, and Tintagel. Padstow. Dartmoor, Bodmin moor and the Eden Project all well within an hour’s drive. Enjoy a very pleasant stroll through country lanes and footpaths nearby. Tackbear’s original manor was built in the 11th century, and the current house in the late 16th. It is a lovely home with a fascinating past, and set in acres of stunning countryside.
